THIS JUST IN! MegaUpload taken down!

"Popular file-sharing website, Megaupload, has been shut down by the federal authorities. Oh, and it turns out its CEO is a music producer. Quite a famous one.

Before we get to the good part, here's the skinny on the takedown. The indictment, which was just unsealed today, accuses Megaupload of breaking anti-piracy laws and claims its pirate-enabling ways have cost copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue. According to reports, charges have been laid against seven Megaupload employees - four of which are already in custody in New Zealand. The Department of Justice reckons this is "among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States," and listed the coming charges as "racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement."

Megaupload's side projects, Megavideo, Megapix, Megabox, and yes, even Megaporn have all been taken down as well.

Now, you might recall that Megaupload was having some legal troubles with universal over a bizzare hip-hop video praising the Megupload service. Now the video makes a bit more sense as it turns out it was produced by Megaupload's CEO, who is none other than multi-million selling hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz. Yes, that Swizz Beatz. The one married to Alicia Keys."

Hacker group Anonymous is raging and raging hard. They've hit more than a few websites in retaliation to this.

A moment of silence is needed here, perhaps?

The people hacking websites are just being idiots. Does anyone really think tinkering with corperational websites OR govermental ones is really going to do anything but make the goverment try harder to close down websites where these people could meet up/set such hacks up?

Not really, but Anonymous is pretty well known for doing shit like this... They've taken down dozens of high-security business websites before now. :/

What worries me is they were using unwilling people to help with the DDoS codes to shut down these sites. The links to overload these sites were a serious Twitter thing last night. I'm hoping these people that didn't know what they were doing don't get perscuted for this...

That's why I hate 'anon'. They can do damage, sure, but it's never in any productive way. It's just stupid net terrorism they involve bystanders in. I would rather go without megaupload and mediafire, than have people in real trouble over idiot anon.

I don't think I've ever commented on your page before because I know I would have remember "your headcanon". I am laughing irl.

Anyway, I think it's stupid Anonymous is hacking sites just as retaliation. It's only making things worse and making people look bad. And, to be honest, the DoJ is only doing their job. It's been two years of investigation.

And shit, this doesn't look too good for Alicia.

No, I don't think you have; Welcome! Seeing other peoples headcanons is always interesting. :D

It's true, but organizations like Anonymous don't really care about that crap. There's a reason why they're considered techno-terrorists.

It's interesting that one of the biggest file-sharing websites, which was used to pirate material a lot of the time, was owned by someone IN the entertainment business. Whether Alicia KNEW her husband was doing this is the question...

Just goes to show, they don't need SOPA, they already have the power to take down sites that are illegally sharing copyrighted content.
